SURVEY TITLE: National Survey of Family Growth

ACRONYMN: NSFG

SPONSOR: National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United States Department of Health and Human Services.

SURVEY PURPOSE: The main purpose of the survey is to provide reliable national data on
marriage, divorce, contraception, and infertility in the United States.

LOCATION SAMPLED: United States.

YEARS SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTED: 2002.

SAMPLE SIZE: In-person interviews were completed with 12,571 respondents 15-44 years of age--7,643 females and 4,928 males.

METHOD OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTION: Audio CASI.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION QUESTIONS:

The following questions are asked in section J of the Female Questionnaire.  Asked of all
respondents age 14-44 years old (See Female Questionnaire):

JG-1. The next question asks about sexual experience you may have had with another female. Have you ever had any sexual experience of any kind with another female? (Yes, No)

JG-2. Thinking about your entire life, how many female sexual partners have you had?

JG-2v. It is very important that we get accurate responses to this key question.  The computer
recorded that you had (see response to JG-2) female sex partners in your entire life.  If this answer is correct, select "Yes" to move on to the next question.  If the computer recorded an incorrect response, please select "No" to change your answer. (Yes, No)

JG-3. Thinking about the last 12 months, that is, since (date), how many female sex partners
have you had? Number____

JG-3v. It is very important that we get accurate responses to this key question.  The computer
recorded that you had (see response to JG-3) female sex partners in the last 12 months.  If this answer is correct, select "Yes" to move on to the next question.  If the computer recorded an incorrect response, please select "No" to change your answer. (Yes, No)

KH-2 Put your penis in his mouth (oral sex)?

KH-3. Put his penis in your rectum or butt (anal sex)?

INTROK15. This next section is about males with whom you have had sexual contact.  Think
about any male with whom you have had oral or anal sex.

KJ-1. Thinking about your entire life, how many male sexual partners have you had? Number____
