SURVEY TITLE: Adult Tobacco Survey(s)

ACRONYMN: ATS

SPONSOR: Providing technical assistance to states that request it but not funding for the actual survey which must come from the state itself: Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United States Department of Health and Human Services.

SURVEY PURPOSE: Population-based surveys that are conducted by state and local areas with partial funding and technical support from the Office on Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The surveys are designed to examine tobacco use, cessation, second hand smoke, and risk perception.

LOCATION SAMPLED: Designed to be a representative sample of each state or local area sampled. The following states or local areas have collected sexual orientation data:

Illinois State Adult Tobacco Survey

New York State Adult Tobacco Survey

YEARS SEXUAL ORIENTATION DATA COLLECTED: Begun in the 1990s, sexual orientation questions were not added by any state or local area until after 2000.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION QUESTIONS: THIS SURVEY HAS NEVER INCLUDED A SEXUAL ORIENTATION VARIABLE AMONG THE CORE VARIABLES STATE AND LOCAL AREAS ARE RECOMMENDED TO COLLECT.  HOWEVER, STATE AND LOCAL SURVEYS CAN INCLUDE SEXUAL ORIENTATION VARIABLES IN ADDITION TO THE CORE REQUIRED VARIABLES IF THEY SO CHOOSE.
